In Colorado, car insurance is mandatory for all drivers. Auto insurance regulations are enforced by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, Division of Insurance. Until 2003, Colorado was a “no-fault” state, but changed the law in order to help reduce the cost of insurance premiums and help prevent claims abuses. Colorado car insurance now operates as a tort system, meaning that fault must be established before an insurance company will pay a claim. Required Car Insurance Colorado drivers must have liability insurance, which covers only the other car and/or driver when an accident is your fault. Colorado drivers must have liability coverage at the following minimums: $25,000 per person for bodily injury. $50,000 per accident for bodily injury. $15,000 per accident for property damage. All other car insurance is optional.

Proof of insurance in Colorado We're all human: sometimes we forget to throw our updated ID cards in the glove box. But if you get pulled over, you're not out of luck: Colorado allows drivers to provide electronic proof of car insurance on their smartphones and other devices as appropriate evidence of coverage. Even better, if you're an Esurance customer, you can access our free mobile app 24/7 for your ID cards, policy documents, and more. Failure to provide proof of insurance upon request can result in a 4-point penalty on your driving record, as well as a fine. Uninsured drivers in Colorado A report from the Insurance Research Council found that 16.2 percent of Colorado drivers were uninsured in 2012, which was above the national average of 12.6 percent. While uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is optional in your state, it provides financial protection if you're ever in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver, and it also protects you in the event of a hit-and-run accident.

Violations of CO Car Insurance Laws

Colorado imposes various penalties for violations of insurance laws such as failure to provide proof of insurance during a stop or failure to purchase the minimum required insurance. Read below to learn about the specific penalties.

Failure to Hold Insurance

Failure to have minimum liability insurance results in the following penalties and fines:
  • 4 points on your driver’s license.
  • $500 minimum fine.
  • License suspension.
    • For the first offense, it will be suspended until you can show proof of insurance.
    • For additional offenses, it will be suspended for up to 8 months.
  • Required community service.
Not only do you risk fines and penalties if you do not have minimum liability insurance, but you are also likely to have much higher rates when you re-apply for insurance after letting it lapse.
Always keep at least the required insurance minimums to ensure low-cost insurance rates long-term.

Failing to Carry Proof of Insurance

You must show proof of car insurance if you are stopped by a police officer or if you are involved in a traffic accident.
If you can’t show proof of insurance during a stop, the officer can check the Colorado car insurance database to see if you have valid insurance. However, even if you have insurance, you may still be issued a ticket for failing to carry proof.

SR-22

You may be legally required to file an SR-22 form (also known as SR22 insurance) from your insurance provider if your license:
  • Has been suspended (or is in danger of suspension).
  • Has been revoked.
SR-22 requirements vary by type of offense and number of offenses and may be required for a specific period of time.
An SR-22 is not insurance; rather, it is a certification filed by your insurance company stating that you will maintain the minimum liability insurance for a predetermined amount of time.
Failure to maintain your insurance policy with a current SR-22 will result in another suspension of your driver’s license. Essentially, the insurance company notifies the DMV that you are no longer keeping your SR-22 current and the DMV penalizes you.
If you decide that you want a new insurance provider, you have to get your new agent to file an SR-22 BEFORE canceling your current policy and SR-22.

Alternative Insurance for High-Risk Drivers

If you’ve had certain traffic violations, you may be deemed a “high-risk driver” by insurance companies. If you are having a hard time finding an insurance carrier because of this status, you do have options.
Colorado participates in the Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plans (WAAIP), which helps high-risk drivers find car insurance.
Under the Colorado Motor Vehicle Insurance Plan, high-risk drivers are insured by a specific company found through WAAIP, but the risk is shared among all insurance companies operating in CO.
To seek coverage through WAAIP, ask an insurance agent to help you apply.
Policies obtained through the WAAIP tend to have much higher rates, so it’s a good idea to shop around for car insurance quotes from multiple companies through the standard market before choosing this route.

Insurance Fraud

Insurance fraud can be committed by anyone and can take many forms, including:
  • False claims.
  • Forged proof of insurance or other documents.
  • Business performed by unlicensed insurance agents or brokers.
If you suspect an individual or business of auto insurance fraud, you can file a complaint with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which will submit your report to your state agency through an online fraud reporting system.
Car insurance fraud costs insurance companies money and can lead to higher rates for all consumers, so it is important to report suspected fraud.

Insurance Questions

If you have a question about a car insurance policy, claim, or provider, you can contact the Colorado Division of Insurance:

Car insurance companies can also use your:
  • Driving history.
  • Age & gender.
  • Marital status.
  • Neighborhood or city’s safety.
  • Car make and model.
Points on your driver’s license for traffic violations, including DUI and DWI violations, can raise your insurance rates.

Savings and availability may vary by agent and can include rate discounts for:
  • Driver education or training.
  • Good or safe driver history.
  • Good student record.

Assurance service is an independent professional service, typically provided by Chartered or Certified Public Accountants, with the goal of improving the information or the context of the information so that decision makers can make more informed, and presumably better, decisions. Assurance services provide independent and professional opinions that reduce the information risk (risk that comes from incorrect information)
Audits can be considered a type of assurance service. However, audits are only designed to test the validity of the financial statements. Under an assurance engagement, accountants can provide a variety of services ranging from information systems security reviews to customer satisfaction surveys. Unlike audit and attestation services that are often highly structured, assurance services tend to be customized and implemented when performed for a smaller group of decision makers within the firm. Often managers must make decisions on things they have incomplete or inaccurate data for, and decisions made on such data may be incorrect and increase the overall business risk. In this respect, assurance services can be very helpful in reducing such risk and help managers or decision makers make more confident decisions within a given firm.

Assurance services can test financial and non-financial information; due to this assurance services can be classified as consulting services. However, assurance services are not considered consulting[citation needed] because in consulting services, an accountant generally uses their professional knowledge to make recommendations for a future event or a procedure, such as the design of an information system or accounting control system. In contrast, assurance services are designed to test the validity of past data of the business cycles. Although there is no boundary to what an accountant can test in assurance services, a practitioner is discouraged from accepting an assurance engagement in which his firm or previous experiences does not provide them with enough expertise to make a professional opinion on the given data.

What Information Will I Need?
Your time is important, and we'll try to get you through the quote process as quickly as possible. In many cases we can fill your vehicle information in automatically based on public records, but to make things easier, it's best if you have the following information nearby:

Your current policy (if you have one)
  • Driving record information for all drivers you'd like included on your policy.
  • Driver's license number(s)
  • Your car's make, model and year, as well as its Vehicle Identification
  • Number (VIN)
  • The odometer reading for each car you'd like an insurance quote for
  • The location where your vehicles are typically parked
What Factors Will Affect My Rate?
When you request an auto insurance quote online, there are three major factors when your rate is calculated:
  • Your Vehicle: The more expensive a car is to repair or replace, the more it costs to insure. Your vehicle's safety features can help lower your auto insurance quote, as can how often you drive the car, and what type of driving it's used for (business or personal).
  • Your Address: Where you live and park your vehicle will affect your auto insurance quote.
  • Your Driving Record - Having fewer incidents such as accidents, moving violations or claims in your driving record will help lower your rate.
If you already have a car insurance policy and are comparing new car insurance quotes to determine what is best for you, make sure that you are comparing similar coverage, limits and deductible amounts. In most cases Liberty Mutual can provide multiple car insurance quotes, any of which can be customized to meet your car insurance needs.
